10-27-09 RFMD earnings tonight up in AH trading

RFMD firmed to a positive range of 4.13 to 4.20, holding this area through the bulk of its first-half and early second-half of evening trade. More aggressive buy support touched the issue deeper into the second-half, driving RFMD up to a plus-side range of 4.24 to its session high of 4.33.

A pre-market open Wednesday looks to have potential in the high 4.20s, or near 4.30.

Over the long-term, RFMD is favoring a widening trend, with more aggressive next-day trade in 12 of the last 19 quarters. In the near term, it has shown wider moves in the last five consecutive quarters.

The strong near- and long-term widening patterns in place, combined with tonight's conistent upside support, would have us looking at potential long plays on RFMD on Wednesday. Early longs may want to target possible entry points at the 4.20 to 4.24 range, levels where buy liquidity was aggressive tonight and where a potential floor support could form.

10-20-09 Yahoo [YHOO] earnings tonight 4 of 5 narrowing

YHOO has narrowed or reversed its share move between the sessions in all but one quarter over the past year. The longer-term trend favors reversals as well, with 12 narrowing moves between the sessions and nine wider next-day moves after evening earnings releases.

Looking deeper into YHOO's performance data, the stock has seen an after-hours decline in nine of the 21 earnings-driven after-hours moves we've tracked, and five times, 56% of the time, followed that trade with a more aggressive decline in the next day's regular session. On the plus side, longs should be wary of evening upside moves as YHOO has recorded an earnings-driven evening gain in 12 of the 21 quarters we've tracked. It has reversed or narrowed that gain in next-day regular session seven times, about 60% of the time.

On July 21, 2009, the stock fell 2.8% during after-hours trading after a Q2 beat. Shares rebounded to gain 3.7% the next day.

On April 21, 2009, YHOO advanced 5.7% in after-hours trade after reporting results in line to above Street estimates. It lost the bulk of that gain the next day, ending up a mere 0.7%.

Looking deeper into the performance data, INTC is a stock for longs to be wary of in the off-hours, and perhaps an issue for shorts to line up if it should post an earnings-driven after-hours upside or downside move. INTC has advanced in the after-hours in 11 of the last 21 quarters we've tracked. However, it saw that advance reverse or narrow in next day trade in nine of those quarters.
